Few fields will get value from quantum computing as quickly as chemistry. Even today’s supercomputers struggle to model a single molecule in its full complexity. We study algorithms designed to do what those machines can’t, and power a new era of discovery in chemistry, materials, and medicine.

We now know that quantum computers have the potential to boost the performance of machine learning systems, and may eventually power efforts in fields from drug discovery to fraud detection. We're doing foundational research in quantum ML to power tomorrow’s smart quantum algorithms.

Few datasets are as complex as those in finance, and quantum computing could reveal hidden patterns in complex data. We’re developing algorithms to reveal once-invisible dynamic arbitrage opportunities, better react to volatility, and serve other crucial unmet needs in the financial sector.

It can take over 10 years to come up with new materials. At IBM Research, we’re looking to accelerate the discovery process using new AI methods, robotics, the hybrid cloud, and quantum computers. Our goal is to unlock new properties and materials to address global challenges in years not decades.
