Programs
IBM Research's Local Education Outreach (LEO) program was created in 1988.
The LEO staff has developed many programs for students and teachers of science and
mathematics in elementary, middle and high school.
The following gives you a sampling of some of the programs we currently offer:
List of Activities
Other LEO activities have included
providing IBM speakers for classrooms,
hosting laboratory tours for selected groups of students, and
hosting meetings of science/mathematics teachers' associations.
Many local high schools have Science Research Courses, two or three year programs
providing students with the opportunity to participate in the scientific research community
and engage in authentic scientific research of their own design.
Having high school students pursue scientific research is clearly aligned with the mission of
Local Education Outreach. Consequently, many student participants, their teachers,
or their parents contact employees of the IBM Watson Research Center seeking
advice and mentoring. While our Research Center does not have a program to provide mentors,
we encourage students to take the initiative to seek out their own mentors. A recommended
pathway to finding a mentor who works at the IBM Watson Research Center is to access the
IBM Research web site,
examine our research programs, identify topics that seem fertile for student research,
and contact researchers who are involved in these topics. Many high school students
have secured mentors by following this prescription.
