IBM Musical Instrument Design Challenge
This special National Engineers Week event,
targeted at 7th and 8th grade students, was held at the
IBM T. J. Watson Research Center on March 1, 2001.
The event featured a lab tour, a concert, and a competition.
During the competition, teams consisting of three students demonstrated
a novel "musical instrument" of their own design and had it perform a song.
A team of judges selected first, second, and third place teams, and each
student on these winning teams received a valuable prize.
The prizes for the first place team members were IBM Thinkpads - laptop computers!
One may think of this competition as an "engineering fair,"
analogous to the more common "science fair" that many schools hold for their students.
What is a Musical Instrument?
A musical instrument is a device for creating and expressively shaping sound.
Musical instruments are used to control sound for communication through hearing.
