IBM Future School Design Challenge-2003 (FSDC-2003)
This special National Engineers Week event,
targeted at Middle/Jr. High School students, was held at the
IBM T. J. Watson Research Center on April 30, 2003.
The event featured a forum, an award ceremony, demonstrations of IBM Research
technology, and refreshments.
During the forum, each team of students displayed a real or virtual model of its
school facility (building and grounds) of the future, along with a poster display explaining the features of the
school.
A team of judges interviewed each team and selected the top two teams. Each
student and the coach/mentor on these top teams received a digital camera.
Additionally, the each student voted for his/her favorite team, and the winning
team members received the "People's Choice Award", a gift certificate for each team member.
Every participant received a memento from IBM, an IBM logo ruler/calculator.
One may think of this forum as an "engineering fair,"
analogous to the more common "science fair" that many schools hold for their students.
Creative Space Utilization was the theme for FSDC-2003.
Teams of students proposed changes to their school that creatively re-designed the use of
its current space without changing the building envelope (exterior walls and roof).
Their solutions incorporated engineering based on sound scientific principles.
The School Building The school plays a very important role in the life of a student.
A typical student (and a typical teacher) spends approximately 1,500 hours per year at
school. This time ought to be as productive as possible for both learning (and teaching)
as well as for non-academic activities such as lunch, sports, after school clubs, music
and arts, guidance, medical care and administration.
The school building should provide an efficient and effective physical environment for
all of these activities. |
